Exclusive Interview with Their Royal Highnesses Of Cambodia

Welcome to today’s special interview featuring member of the esteemed Norodom Dynasty of Cambodia. We are honored to have the opportunity to speak with His Royal Highness Prince Narithipong Norodom (Prince Nari), prominent figure within the royal family. As the nephew of the current King Sihamoni Norodom and the grandchildren of the legendary King Sihanouk Norodom and Queen Mother Monineath Norodom, he offers us a glimpse into the rich history and heritage of The House of Norodom, the ruling royal house of Cambodia. Join us as we delve into his life, insight, and the legacy of one of the oldest and rarest reigning royal families in history, dating back to 68 AD.

Gaël: Prince Nari, could you please describe your current position and the role of the Royal Family in today’s Cambodia?

My position as a member of the royal family bestows upon me both privilege and responsibility. We strive for the well-being of our people, preserving our rich culture, and contributing to national development.

Is the weight of the Prince’s title and the rich history of the Royal Family occasionally challenging to shoulder, or does it afford more privilege?

Bearing the title of Prince comes with its challenges, but it is foremost an honor. The historical richness of our family is a constant source of inspiration. My youth in France was marked by exile but also by learning and resilience. These trials have reinforced our determination to contribute positively to society.

Speaking of history, The Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, which seized power through a coup d’état in 1975 under the leadership of Pol Pot, enforced an extreme form of communism and implemented harsh policies that led to the deaths of millions of Cambodians. As a result of this regime, a significant portion of the Royal Family was compelled to go into exile. What memories do you have of that tumultuous period?

The stories of the elders and my exile in France during my youth have left a profound impact on me. This period highlighted the importance of resilience and hope for Cambodia. It is a part of our history that underscores the incredible strength of our people in the face of adversity.

What is your relationship with the Royal Palace? Do you often visit to meet your uncle, His Royal Highness King Sihamoni Norodom, or your grandmother, Queen Mother Monineath Norodom?

My relationship with the Royal Palace embodies a harmony between intimate family ties and the official duties inherent to my position within the royal family. Yes. During family audiences, our exchanges are based on affection and respect, while during the official ceremonies organized by the Royal Palace, I proudly assume my representational responsibilities.

Angkor Wat, of course, represents the beating heart of our history, a masterpiece of Khmer architecture that captivates the attention of the entire world. But our heritage extends well beyond these ancient stones. The temples of Bayonand Ta Prohm, swallowed by the jungle, offer mesmerizing visions of grandeur and transience, while the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, with the Silver Pagoda, dazzles with its elegance and spirituality.

The Silver Pagoda is located on the south side of the Royal Palace in Chey Chumneas, Phnom Penh

The landscapes of Cambodia are breathtakingly beautiful, from the tranquil shores of Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, to the pristine beaches of Sihanoukville and the mystical mountains of Ratanakiri. Every corner of our country promises unforgettable discoveries and adventures.

I therefore invite you to come explore Cambodia, to delve into its captivating history, to savor its rich culture, and to marvel at its varied landscapes. Come see for yourself why our country is a destination of choice for travelers seeking authenticity, beauty, and inspiration.

If you had to describe present-day Cambodia to our readers in a few lines, what would it be? And what adjectives would you use to describe the Cambodian people?

Today’s Cambodia is also a vibrant culture expressed through colorful festivals such as the Water Festival and the Khmer New Year, where traditions and zest for life meet in a burst of celebrations. These events are open windows to the Cambodian soul, filled with conviviality and ancient traditions.

Angelina Jolie discovered Cambodia during the filming of Tomb Raider. Subsequently, she adopted the Cambodian child Maddox and has since become one of Cambodia’s fervent ambassadors. She even obtained Cambodian nationality. What are your thoughts on her approach?

Angelina Jolie has played a significant role in promoting Cambodia on the international stage. Her commitment to our country and her adoption of a Cambodian child are gestures that have strengthened the ties between Cambodia and the world. We appreciate her love and ongoing support. I had the honor and privilege to admire her immense talent as well as her kindness and great beauty during the screening of her film, ‘First They Killed My Father,’ at the Angkor Wat site, in the presence of members of the Royal Family, His Majesty our King, Norodom Sihamoni, and Her Majesty our Queen Mother, Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.

Cinema has given the kingdom a great spotlight, but social media seems to be taking over. What is the role of social media in Cambodia, and does it influence the country’s life?

Social media has transformed how we share and celebrate our culture. They provide a platform to showcase the dynamism of Cambodia, engaging not just young Cambodians but also attracting international attention.

What factors have contributed to this historically significant relationship with China, and how does it manifest in contemporary times?

Our historic relationship with China continues to influence our economic and cultural development. The Royal Family has maintained a privileged relationship with China for several decades, based on loyalty and mutual respect, initiated by the Father of the Nation, King Norodom Sihanouk, my grandfather. We see this relationship as a strategic partnership beneficial to our growth. As for the future, I am optimistic.Cambodia is on an upward trajectory, and I am determined to contribute to its prominence.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambitions are focused on enhancing Cambodia’s standing through tourism, welcoming foreign investors, and promoting our arts and culture.

Trough the “Shanty Town Spirit” association, which has been created by my Spouse and myself 12 years ago, we thrive to help Cambodian people, to support self-employment and self-sufficient of families living in a impoverish communities, to improve their quality of life.

Thank you very much, Prince Nari, for your time and for opening the doors of this magical kingdom, Cambodia.

It was truly a pleasure, Gaël. You and your esteemed readers are cordially invited to explore the wonders of our magnificent country.
