Thank you for joining us today Aurélien. Could you please introduce yourself to our audience?
Thank you for having me. I’m Aurélien Muller, an international model and French actor for the past 10 years.
Let’s start by delving into your journey. How did you first become interested in modeling, and what steps did you take to pursue it as a career?
I initially pursued engineering studies, and upon arriving in Paris to begin my internship, I was scouted on the street. After so many years of studying, I didn’t want to give up so close to obtaining my degree. Therefore, I chose to finish my studies first and work as a business engineer for 2 years. However, after numerous opportunities arose, I eventually decided to venture into modeling, and now, after 10 years, I have no regrets about my choice.
What made you trust New Madison’s vision instead of another modeling agency?
The person who scouted me at the time advised me to knock on the door of New Madison, considered the best male agency worldwide, with access to the most prestigious cosmetic and perfume contracts, which was my ultimate dream to sign in this industry.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your modeling career so far?
Modeling opens the door to a multitude of different universes, places, people, and events, each more fascinating than the last. Of course, for all the brands I represent.
Did you have the chance to meet the founders or art directors of famous brands? Who has left the most lasting impression on you, and what was the reason behind it?
I am consistently in contact with their creators or artistic directors. They all have enriched me with unique experiences, and I enjoy working with all these nuances of personalities.
On the flip side, what are some of the challenges you’ve faced in the industry?
There have been times when I couldn’t sign with major fashion houses in the past due to my height or muscle mass not always meeting the standard criteria, which was sometimes very frustrating for me.
Like many artistic fields, the modeling industry is often criticized for its pitfalls. Have you experienced any setbacks like these, and what advice would you give to avoid these traps?
I have been fortunate not to have been confronted with dramatic situations. Like in all professional environments, I believe it is essential to maintain a distance without crossing boundaries.
In the industry, it’s said that you’ve signed one of the biggest contracts worldwide as a male model. Could you elaborate on the range of fees that different models typically receive?
Yes, thanks to my preparation and the confidence that I was able to bring as well as the image and reputation that I created in modeling, I was lucky to have had this opportunity to sign a contract of 3 years of exclusivity with the luxury house Dolce&Gabbana including shows, lookbook, clothing, cosmetics and perfume campaigns. A 7-figure contract which according to my agent was unprecedented in the industry. About daily fees, it all came down to every agent and how good they are to negotiate with the clients and how established the model is. It could start from 1,500€ invoiced per day for a new face to 20,000€ a day or more for a top model. However, the usage/royalties are the most important factor. The more exposure and longevity of the usage there is, the more royalties the model can get.
What would you say sets you apart in such a competitive industry, and what has been the key to your success?
For my first shoot, I had the chance to share the cover of V Magazine with Joan Smalls shot by Mario Testino which was followed by a shoot with Bruce Weber for Vogue Hommes and immediately established me as a top model.
How do you stay in shape and maintain your physique for modeling gigs?
Physical fitness is a crucial part of the job. Every day without fail, I exercise. For several years now, I have been on a ketogenic diet and practice intermittent fasting daily, which works very well for me.
How do you approach preparing for a photoshoot or runway show?
Modeling requires daily preparation; you must always be ready. We can be called for one day to another for a shooting or even on the same day for castings, so lifestyle hygiene must be impeccable.
Could you share a particularly memorable moment or project from your career that stands out to you?
The first experience is always the most memorable: a new life, a new adventure beginning, a total discovery. In my case, the V Magazine cover was released on my birthday, so it remains unforgettable.
Switching gears a bit, how do you maintain a balance between your professional life as a model and your personal life?
Balance is very important between my professional and personal life. Without one, I would not feel completely fulfilled. My experiences in modeling are moments I enjoy sharing with my family. When I am with my wife and daughter, I fully embrace the present moment, allowing me to be fully recharged with positive energy in my professional life.
I heard about your interest in exploring the cinema industry. What are your plans for the future, and how are you preparing to achieve them?
Indeed, I started my acting career at the same time as my modeling career. My first role in a short film at the time allowed me to go to the Cannes Film Festival and win numerous festivals worldwide. Modeling took up a significant part of my time, and the travels were continuous, but for a few years now, I have felt the profound need to return to acting. I took advantage of the lockdown to intensify my acting training, and I have been very happy since participating in beautiful projects. However, this is just the beginning, and I now want to be able to fully dedicate myself to this activity that deeply inspires me.
Is this a transitional phase between your modeling career and acting, or does it present a mutually beneficial opportunity for both paths?
Modeling and acting are complementary for me. I am primarily in the luxury and perfume industry as a model, and actors are my main competition.
The magazine has officially partnered with one of the biggest Hollywood movie studios. This is your opportunity to capture their attention. What message would you like to convey to them?
It’s a great opportunity to now introduce myself as an actor and gain visibility in that direction. I work hard to make my name in acting resonate as strongly as it does in modeling, and I hope to have the opportunity to prove that to you very soon.
As we wrap up, what advice would you give to aspiring male models who hope to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t play a role; be yourself. Personality and individuality are factors that make a difference beyond physical appearance.
Thank you so much for sharing your insights and experiences with us today. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you.
Thank you very much for taking the time to get to know me a little better.
